These women walk boldly while carrying burdens- stacks of books and creatures weighing them down. There was a time when women practiced posture exercises by balancing books on their heads in order to appear more lady-like. These women walk unabashedly, taking one deliberate step forward at a time. I chose books to symbolize our history, full of mistakes and miracles of the past that disgust or inspire us. The focal point of this image pays homage to Frida Kahlo, who in many ways is my art-mother. Her passion, resilience and poignant, personal themes taught me to give birth to my own challenging narratives. There are some elements of feminist humor here, questioning imposed rules of wearing shirts, shaving legs, and keeping the fallopian tubes in check.
