Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez (1656)

Velasquez is one of the most skilled painters in Art History, and Las Meninas is one of his most complex and mysterious compositions. He painted the young princess and her friends with such skill and tenderness. I decided to paint dogs in place of people, because animals have the ability to transcend beyond the weird social barriers that we humans seem to build. I used Spanish breeds of dogs since this is a portrait from the Spanish royal court.
