How Dare You? (Pierced Baby)
This ceramic sculpture was inspired in part by the “HOW DARE YOU?” speech given by Greta Thunberg. This young woman asked this question boldly to the older generation, demanding to know how dare we not do more about climate change. I was impressed with her perspective, and it made me think about how we must look at all complex issues from multiple viewpoints.
This figure is covered in holes, which could symbolize many things- bullet wounds from exposure to violence, self-inflicted injury, body piercings, exposure to something dangerous. The older generation might look at the figure and judge:
"Why is this person in my neighborhood? Since I don't know them they could be dangerous and don't belong here. What's with the young people of today, who get themselves excessively body pierced and tattooed? Why are youth so obsessed with video game violence and guns (in this figure's hand is a weapon -unclear if it is a piercing gun or an actual weapon, but it has eyeballs. Why do today's youth have so many issues with anxiety and depression and are plugged in to their phones 24/7 (The figure has creatures in each ear - like ear buds!) What color are you- are you from around here? If not, you don't belong here."
Now consider things from a young person's perspective-asking the older generation: "Why do you judge me based on my color, heritage, or my choice to pierce my body when I see it as artistic expression? Why do you assume I am dangerous? Why do you insist on very little gun regulation so that shootings become commonplace occurrences for youth? Why must we grow up in a polluted, tainted world with insurmountable climate issues because the older generation won't acknowledge the drastic changes necessary?"
The antlers suggest wisdom gained through age, but also reflect the biases we acquire with time. There is some lovely and scary glaze experimentation with drippy glass on this figure, as it stands before us, in undies and combat boots, like a deer in headlights.
